September 2nd-5th
Hey Superheroes!
Welcome back after a LOOOOONNNNGGGG weekend =D I needed to sleep and hang out with my family! I hope you all were able to do some random acts of kindness while you were at home!
This week:
Vocabulary Test-Thursday
Spelling Test-Friday
Lesson Assessment-Monday
Mon-Thurs=Check your homework checklist to see what you have to do!
You need to read the story every night! There is also a page/section for Math, Vocabulary, Spelling, and a chart for Fluency.
This is to help YOU! If you have other ways to study for Vocabulary/Spelling-that is GREAT! You do what works for your child. I just wanted to give you resources-just in case you wanted to try something different or did not know where to start! This will also help you to know where your child is in our classroom. The homework is a review of what we are doing daily in class. If your child is struggling-you will know the area and can give that area extra attention at home!
We took a Math test last week and we will ALL be doing some in class activities to make up some of those grades! We will be working on reading word problems MORE CAREFULLY! I feel like that was a big reason why many students missed these problems!! Encourage them to slow down and read carefully!

Math-We are working on Addition Strategies-

Adding Doubles 4+4=8; 2+2=4; 8+8=16
Adding Near Doubles 4+5= ; 5+6= ;
We will use ten frames, part-part-whole boxes, number lines, and mental math strategies to solve these addition facts!

Our Second Grade Superheroes Saved the First Week of School!!!!!!
Whew! That was a quick one! Your second grade superhero saved our sweet week! Our class would not be the same without them!
This week, we:
**Took a Math and Reading placement or Benchmark exam. These are basically for me to see where the students are so that I can better plan for them!
**We began our Reading routines and read Little Red Riding Hood and Little Green Riding Hood. We talked about fables and plays while emphasizing summarizing, making predictions, and clarifying hard to understand passages.
**On Friday, we talked about our old friends, Frog and Toad Do you remember them?
I have some great memories of Frog and Toad! The kids find their quirks equally as funny today!
**In Math, we worked on missing addend one digit addition in different forms-addition sentences, numberbonds, boxes, etc. We used connector blocks and plastic trays and plates to model these often difficult concepts.
**Next week, we will begin our quest for single digit math automaticity. This means that students will practice addition facts like 0+1, 0+2, 0+3 (or we call zeroes). When they master these, they will go on to the 1's, 2's, etc. Once they master addition facts, they will go on to subtraction and maybe multiplication (if we make it that far!). For those of you that want to practice at home, I have an account at www.Xtra.org . I will send home a username and password with each student next week. This is not required, but it is encouraged! =D It only takes about five minutes per day!
**Also, next week, we will continue to establish our Whole Group reading routines and we will start sending Decodables home! Please encourage your child to read these to you at home. This will give you a good idea what they need to work on!
Look for our Newsletter on Monday or Tuesday! AND-look for those binders! My goal is Monday, but I feel like it might be Tuesday!

Introducing-the SECOND GRADE SUPERHEROES!!!!
Welcome to our Superhero Blog!! This is your "go-to" place for assignments, spelling words, vocabulary words, test study guides and SO MUCH MORE! YOU, my friends, have a few decisions to make.
1. What will you do to make our Burning Springs City-the safest, friendliest, and cleanest city around?
2. What IS your super POWER and how will you use it to help yourself and others?
3. What is NOT your super POWER and what will you do to always try your best?
Your super teacher: My name is Mrs. Amanda Varney! I taught 1 year in Madison County before God led me to teach in Brasilia, Brazil at an American-based International Christian School. I taught Preschool, Kindergarten, and a little bit of 1st grade while there. I learned many things about people, culture, language, and love. I moved back to Manchester in 2012 to get married and landed a job at Hacker Elementary in December of that year. I taught there until last year and now, I am proud to be a Burning Springs Bobcat!!!!

Students : How will YOU use YOUR super powers?
1. What will you do to make sure that our Burning Springs City is the safest, friendliest, and cleanest city around?
2. What IS your super POWER and what will you do to help yourself and others this year?
3. What is NOT your super power and what will you do to always try your best?

What's MY super power?
Hi! My name is Mrs. Amanda Bolin Varney. I went to Manchester Elementary and graduated from Clay County High School in 2000. I graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 2005 and worked in the Madison County School system for three years. In 2008, I moved to sunny Brasilia, Brazil (yes! South America!) for the "adventure" of my life! I worked in an American christian school in the capital city. I taught and made friends with people from Kuwait, South Africa, Namibia, Panama, Great Britian, and many more countries during my four year venture there! God lead me to Brazil and in 2012, He had something else for me! I came home, got married, and landed a teaching position at Hacker Elementary! I taught a 1st and 2nd grade split for 1 1/2 years before coming to you this year! I am VERY excited to be a Bobcat and to begin this "super" adventure with you! I will be posting the newsletter and any other important documents here each week just in case your little superheroes lose their stuff while saving our vast community!
So-what IS my superpower?
First and foremost-I am here because of the sweet grace of Jesus. He is the only reason I am alive and has worked all things in my life for my good (the good and the bad!) I love serving Him and serving people! He is all the good that is within me!
I love teaching-it's the only thing I've ever wanted to do. I strive to make learning fun and challenging.
My husband works for Operation Unite-so we are constantly working with drug addicts, recovering addicts, and learning about new drugs and trends. We are committed to helping communities get help with the drug epidemic.
I also love doing community service, being with families, and doing fun things with children/youth outside of school! I like when the concept of community spills over past the end of the school day! I look forward to getting to know your family and the community!
This is our third year coaching Upward Soccer as well as working with Unite in their "Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs" program in Laurel County and our second year helping with the Jeff Shepherd "Shoot Hoops Not Drugs" basketball camps.
